Children
At Risk
| In
the last 15 years, there has been a 160% increase in the incidence
of asthma among young children. American Lung Association lists
contaminants from household cleaners as one trigger for asthma.
[1] |
Childhood
cancer has risen 10.8% in 10 years. In children ages 1-14, cancer
causes more deaths in the U.S than any other disease. [5] |
Dust
can contain hundred of chemicals, some of which may cause disease
including infection, asthma and cancer. Crawling infants who mouth
their fingers can ingest 10 grams of dust per day in a dusty home.
[2] |
Each individual
has a different threshold for toxins. The body has natural mechanisms
to clean toxins.
But in children,
including babies in utero and nursing infants, these mechanisms are
more easily strained.
This causes children
to be prone to health problems associated with hazardous products in
the home. *
*
The elderly, people with illness and animals are also
more at risk for health problems, where toxic products are used.
WHY ARE CHILDREN MORE VULNERABLE?
|
CHILDREN'S
BODIES ARE DIFFERENT
|
|
CHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES ARE DIFFERENT
|
| Ø Their respiratory
and body defense systems are still developing. |
|
Ø
They spend more time on the floor and put things in their mouth.
Contaminants linger on the floor and other surfaces.
|
| Ø Their breathing
and metabolic rate is faster, so more pollutants get into their
system. |
|
Ø
High energy play increases their breathing and metabolic rate. |
INFORMATION
FOR NEW PARENTS?

Babies' bodies are especially
prone to
health risk from hazardous
chemicals.

Since children don't read labels
or understand the dangers,
they are at greater risk for poisoning.
More than 45% of all posionings,
happen in the home,
to children under 6. [17]
