WHY WHAT DOES CLEAN MEAN

Most of us consider something clean if it is returned to its
original color, luster and feel and the smell is fresh.

But, do you also think about the invisible contaminants, particles or gases,
that are released during cleaning or while the product is stored ?

What is the impact of these contaminants to your family's health and the environment ?

Toxic household cleaners release
contaminants into the air and
on surfaces your home.

TEST YOUR CHOICES

LOOKS CLEAN, SMELLS CLEAN, FEELS CLEAN:
TEST YOUR REACTION

Now that you are more aware of the hazards of cleaners, test different ones to see which you prefer. For example, run a test on your tub or shower using three different types of scouring powders / tile cleaners.

(Please always wear gloves.)

Toxic cleaner

If you have one in your home, try a common brand that is toxic, i.e. with a label saying Danger or Warning. Follow the directions on the label.

Less Toxic cleaner

Choose a commercial non-toxic or less toxic brand. Follow the directions on the label.

Mix a homemade cleaner

Put ½ cup of baking soda in a bowl. Rinse the surface you are cleaning. Scoop the powder on to a wet sponge, add a drop of liquid soap and scrub the entire surface. Wait 5-10 minuets then rinse thoroughly.

 THE LOOK TEST
While cleaning with each product, be sensitive to your eyes.
Do you feel any irritation or burning ? After completely rinsing
the area how does it look ? Is it bright, shiny, clear ?

THE SMELL TEST

As you apply each product sniff gently, at arms length.

How does it smell ? Are you sensitive to the smell of harsh

chemicals and fragrances ? How does it feel in the nose,

throat and lungs ? Is the air fresh ? Do you detect any lingering contaminants ?

THE TOUCH TEST

As you are cleaning with each product, how does it feel ?

(Please always wear gloves, even when using safer products.)

After completely rinsing the area how does it feel ? Is it smooth ?

Is there any residue ? Do you detect any lingering contaminants ?
